Calculating Net MRR with Custom Equations

Written by David Staat | Jun 30, 2023 4:37:02 PM

The good ol’ MRR field! It’s a great way to track your monthly recurring revenue. Which makes sense given that’s what the acronym stands for. And it’s made even better by using saas•hapily (excellent choice by the way).

But you like to make your customers feel special. Feel taken care of. So naturally you offer them special deals and discounts. But that’s where you run into a problem:

The MRR field doesn’t take discounts into account.

Great. More work for you right? How about less work instead? I like that option better. And thanks to HubSpot’s new beta around custom equations for calculated properties, less work is exactly what you’re getting!

How do you create a Net MRR property?

When I first heard the term “Net Revenue” used as a teenager, I didn’t take the time to actually consider what it meant. I just knew it was really important to my boss. But it’s essentially what the company is earning after discounts have been applied. So yeah, it’s pretty important.

Calculating this can be tricky though given each customer has his or her own products and discounts. Originally, you’d have to create a custom property and set up a workflow to make this calculation.

But not anymore! With our new custom property, Net MRR, the calculation is made for you! At the time of this post it's still only available in the HubSpot beta mentioned earlier, so you'll need to create it manually if you haven't already. Don't worry! I can walk you through how in this blog post here.

Whenever a discount is applied, this property will automatically be filled out on your saas•hapily Subscription object! Way easier than having to make the calculation yourself or manage a workflow. Want to see it in action? Check out this example here:

This customer made a bundle purchase. While it’s not reflected in the MRR field, you can see it applied in the Net MRR field! And guess what? The calculation will be made even if the customer has a yearly subscription! How’s that for convenience?
